Training and knowledge transfer needs to be more than just a one-way information dump of facts. The mind is limited in its ability to retain information. The information can’t be delivered too quickly, and contain no context, especially if the subject is very technical.
Traditional leader-led training results in very low retention rates. The rate of retention is determined by the rate of information delivery, the learner’s language skills, and the learner’s attention span. The only way to improve retention is to couple the leader-led training with exercises, supplementary reading, review, and testing.
Self-paced training improves retention by allowing the learner to: access the training at their schedule, repeat sections, and break the information transfer into smaller pieces. Coupled with scenario-based interactions to provide context, the learner has a much better chance at retaining complex information.
